“Gibby’s been unbelievable,” Shapiro said Sunday. “I appreciate (watching) him across the field, but his consistency, his patience, his positive attitude, his openness to ideas and thoughts, there’s a steadiness to him and a professionalism to him that, day to day, has just been extremely impressive.”

Shapiro also praised Gibbons’ coaching staff, pouring cold water on the suggestion that he hired player development advisor Eric Wedge — the 2007 AL Manager of the Year — to be the ‘manager in waiting’ and that Gibbons will be given a very short leash.

On Monday, MLB Network Radio’s Steve Phillips reported the Jays have gave Gibbons a two-year contract though 2017 with a raise. The deal reportedly eliminates the rollover clause in original deal, which kicked in every Jan. 1 but was only good for the following season. The new deal is aimed at avoiding lame duck status for Gibbons under new management. He had made the rollover arrangement with previous GM Alex Anthopoulos, who hired him in 2013. read more at news.nationalpost.com
