Why We Love to Color Mandalas

January 19, 2021 By Vicky Wells

What Is a Mandala?

Mandala is a Sanskrit word for circle. But, the mandalas we see today are so much more than a simple circle.

A mandala generally refers to a geometric configuration of various types of symbols; religious iconography, nature symbols (both flora and fauna), whimsical symbols, geometric shapes (think kaleidoscope) and pretty much anything else, too.

According to Wikipedia

“The mandala is a diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a time-microcosm of the universe, but it originally meant to represent wholeness and a model for the organizational structure of life itself, a cosmic diagram that shows the relation to the infinite and the world that extends beyond and within various minds & bodies.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandala

Do Mandala Have Meanings?

There have been both religious and political meanings attached to mandalas.

Religious

In Hinduism, a mandala (sometimes called a yantra) suggest radial balance. There is, of course, more to it than that and we encourage you to research the religious meanings of mandalas if that interests you.

Political

The term “mandala” has also been used to refer to traditional Southeast Asia political formations, which are non-traditional in the European sense. Empires such as Bagan, Khmer and Majapahit are know as mandalas.

If the political meaning of mandalas interests you, we encourage you to do further research.

Why Are They So Popular for Coloring Books?

There are many coloring books that feature mandalas. Why is that?

Relaxation & Tranquility

Many people find that immersing themselves in the art of coloring mandalas provides them with a feeling of relaxation and tranquility.

It provides a diversion, or escape, from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Challenging

Coloring intricate mandalas can sometimes be quite challenging and this provides a sense of accomplishment.

Uniqueness

Applying different color schemes, even to identical mandalas, makes each one unique and personal.
